What type of light bulb should I buy/use for my indoor garden?

I’m growing a little container herb garden in my bedroom, but it doesn’t get enough light during the day. I want to buy a light bulb or a really cheap lamp (as in under $25 if possible) I can use instead of buying the really expensive ones I’ve seen on the internet. What type of light bulb should I buy? Where can I buy them? How much are they going to cost?

hello Im doing the same as you. Only Im growing full size tomatoes in my basement with no “real sun”. I am using compact fluorescent bulbs, they are those swirly energy efficient bulbs. some have different color light spectrums ( day light, cool white, natural) but it doesn’t really matter for you. I don’t know the circumstances of your herb garden, the size, the plants etc. but more light might be required. To get the most light to the plants line the area with tin foil, and get a reflector so no light is wasted. That you don’t have a high power bill get a timer for the lights, set it to 18/6 (18 hours of light and 6 of dark like summer). have a fan close by or shake the plants to strengthen their stems so the don’t become spindly and keep the light at max 3 inches away

what you will need to grow
42 watt “CFL” $10
cheap timer $5
socket/reflector $5
tin foil $3
total $23

Light Bulb

Have you switched to those funny looking, swirly light bulbs? You know the ones, they are called compact fluorescent or CFL. They look funny and they cost more, but in the long run they are far better for the environment. Plus the end up costing far less than standard bulbs!

You are probably thinking that compact fluorescent’s will never match up to standard bulbs in terms of light. However, energy saving CFL’s have come a long way in the last 10 to 15 years. Yes, the first energy saving lights available on the market were slow to power on and gave of a dim, sometimes flickering light. The compact fluorescent bulbs of today power on quicker and give off a bright, white light – just like the standard ones.

The real difference is in the energy savings you will get from replacing your standard bulbs with compact fluorescent’s. Each funny looking light bulb will replace six to eight regular ones. That’s right. You will be changing your light’s less because the CFL bulbs last longer! They also consume far less energy. A compact fluorescent bulb will give off the same light as an incandescent one, yet use 70-80% less energy!

To put that energy savings into perspective, think of it like this. If every household in America replaced just one incandescent bulb with a CFL bulb, the energy saved would be enough to power a city of 1.5 million people – or all the homes in Delaware and Rhode Island! That is replacing just one light bulb – what if everyone replaced two or five of them? How about replacing ten? Imagine the energy savings and the greenhouse gases not being released into the atmosphere!

Of course those energy savings will benefit both the consumer and the environment. Replacing your incandescent bulbs with CFL’s will lower your own energy costs as well. Yes, the cost of the bulb is more than a standard bulb, but they last longer and use less energy. All of this translates into lower costs for you. One compact fluorescent bulb will pay for itself in about five months with the energy savings. When you figure that each CFL bulb lasts anywhere from five to ten years that savings really adds up!

Saving money and energy is as easy as screwing in a light bulb. You can do your part in reducing greenhouse gas emissions just by switching the way you light your home!
