Is it bad for a band’s image to have a drummer to use a drum machine rather than a drum set?

Me and my friend are a 70s style punk duo. I do the guitar and he does the drums, and afterward the vocals are added (I can’t sing and play the guitar very well). Money is tight, and I can’t afford a drum set. I do have an Alesis SR-16 drum machine that I used back in my old school hip hop days. We tried it out and it sounds perfectly fine, especially since the recording quality is terrible ($2 mic that distorts easily, we record it in a room that echos, etc). But my question is does it look bad for a band to have a drum machine for a drum set, despite it seriously making no difference when recorded?

It’s not bad at all. Read up on what you can do using both footswitches for performance, like switching between the A and B variations, inserting fills, and holding on the same pattern if you just want to jam a bit.

You might miss the energy that live drums add to the mix, but the SR-16 is a pretty good little machine (I regret selling mine).

The Dell 1700n makes for a good printer. It combines a low price, is ready to be networked, looks good in the office and is easy to install. It gives you just about everything you need for a Windows-based small office network or personal-size printer. There are also other Dell printers available for high-output operations, so shop wisely. Dell 1700n Considerations.

Making quality black-and-white pages, the 1700N starts at a price well within reach of the average small business owner. In fact, it’s hard to find a less-expensive networked laser printer on the market. With a printing capability of about 15,000 pages per month, the Dell is no slouch, either. It also delivers acceptable graphics that are clear and easily-readable in mass-produced form. For anything that requires a fancy or expensive look (very rare), perhaps another more-expensive printer is in order.

Specifications.

Weighing less than 27 pounds, the Dell is easily movable, and at a bit more than 1 foot deep by 1 foot wide by 10 inches high, it won’t take up too much space. It also has a single 10/100 Ethernet jack and USB 2.0 ports for ease of use. There are even parallel ports, which are increasingly rare these days. All of these ports are located at the rear of the printer, by the way. As with most of these machines, you can feed in paper manually or within the feeder tray. It holds about 250 pieces, and capacity can be expanded for a small price.

Costs of Ownership. 

The Dell uses a standard toner cartridge (1700n) which sits above an imaging drum. Each cartridge is good for thousands of pages (about 3,000), which should be more than sufficient for any home-based business or small network in an office. There are also higher output cartridges, again for additional cost.

Capabilities.

The 1700n is capable of about 32 megabytes of storage, which is more than enough for most home business applications. If you need more memory, it’s expandable to 160 megs. There are also interior slots for added DRAM, which is very inexpensive these days. It’s also compatible with Windows 98 or higher computers through either its modern USB 2.0 ports or the last-generation parallel ports in the back. It’ll also email you if it starts running low on toner.

Printing Quality.

The Dell 1700n delivers up to 1200dpi printing. There are also easy menus you can follow if you have complicated or double-sided print jobs to perform. It can insert watermarks once an administrator has put them into the system. In fact, there’s an array of print features normally found in higher-priced machines.

Warranty and Cartridges.

The 1700n has a one-year exchange warranty, which is standard in the industry. You can also purchase up to four more years for a nominal fee. Cartridges are easy to replace and don’t cost a lot.

Bottom Line. For a small office or home-based business that needs basic black-and-white printing, the Dell 1700n and its Dell 1700n toner cartridge are the ones to consider.
